BJP Conducts Seaweed Cultivation Program
Jepara, 24th May 2023 – PT Bhumi Jati Power (hereinafter “BJP”) collaborated with Brackish Aquaculture Fisheries Centre Jepara (hereinafter “BBPBAP”) has successfully conducted initial seaweed planting in Bondo Beach on Wednesday, 24 May 2023. This program has the purpose to support the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for coastal communities, especially in the Bondo Beach area.
The coastal community group as a beneficiary of the program consists of 20 members coming from various elements such as fishermen, farmers, tourism awareness groups, etc with the group name is Jaya Samudera Group. Through the seaweed cultivation program, BJP expects that the coastal community could be more independent and have a decent income, especially during in the monsoon season whereby most of the fishermen cannot catch the fish due to big waves.
The event was opened with a speech from the Head of BBPBAP represented by the coordinator of the technical team Mr. Moh Arifin, followed by a speech from the Head of Bondo Village, Mr. Purwanto, then continue the speech of BJP’s Site Project Manager Mr. Hadi Suwasono. The highlight of the event was the symbolic handover of seaweed from the BJP to the village and Jaya Samudera Group. This is symbolized of the company’s hope to beneficiaries that the program will be well-implemented in the future. The event was closed with the seaweed seeds planted at sea.
Mr. Arifin stated that the seaweed cultivation program is a pilot project from BBPBAP and BJP and is the collaboration of an agency and private company to develop fishery products in Jepara. He also stated his appreciation of the great enthusiasm of the group members. Mr. Arifin explained that BBPBAP has prepared the market for seaweed products. The raw material will be sold to factories in Surabaya and Semarang while the processed product will be marketed at market stalls under Fishery Agency.
Mr. Hadi Suwasono as the Site Project Manager of BJP conveyed that the seaweed cultivation program is the company’s contribution to the surrounding community, remembering that BJP will be operated for the next 25 years since the last PCOD in September 2022. He hoped that this program will be successfully run and the recipient will always be enthusiastic to run the program.
Mr. Purwanto, as Head of Bondo Village added this program shall be well monitored and mentored regularly for the best result, and hope that it will increase the community’s welfare and income.
According to the explanation from BBPBAP, the type of seaweed is Eucheuma cottonii which is cultivated using the long-line method. The total of installed long-line is 40 units long-lines and every long-line has consisted of 7 lines (@ 50-meter length), each line will be installed with 250 seaweed planted points with a weight of 25-50 grams/point. It is expected that at the end of the cultivation period within 45 days for each cycle, the total harvest production is around 15 tons/ harvest. Regarding seaweed marketing, the seaweed product is not only sold in raw material but also in processed products. This program is one of the sustainable programs for the surrounding community to increase community welfare and develop villager’s economies.
BJP will continue to support the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) surrounding the Project, to improve the welfare of the community.
